🥃 Review 54 - Ezra Brooks Cask Strength Bourbon Store Pick

Ezra Brooks Cask Strength Bourbon Whiskey Single Barrel selected by Smyrna World of Beverage

Produced (at the time of this bottling) by Heaven Hill in Bardstown Kentucky, Ezra Brooks is a brand owned by Lux Row which itself is a property of the Indiana overlords at Midwest Grain Products.  There are 99 proof, 99 proof finished, rye, and seven-year versions of Ezra Brooks floating around. They have a robust private barrel program and also have put out a number of distiller select barrels to large retailers to get rid of excess inventory. Lux Row now produces the juice in house at their own Bardstown Facility.

🛒Sourced: $41.99 - 750ml - World of Beverage Smyrna, GA - Discounted as the last few bottles of a store pick, normally $54. I see distiller's selects of this around the $60 mark, though some ABC state picks are around $35. March 2025 update - seeing distiller picks in the low $50s, they're trying to move these and not having much success.

🧪Proof: 120 proof, 60% ABV  - This is a great example of how "Cask Strength" is not a regulated term. Barrel entry proof for Ezra Brooks is 125 and this nice round number across many different private barrels suggests the addition of water to reach the 120 proof point.

Ezra Brooks Cask Strength Bourbon label zoomed in

🎨Color: R3 - A slightly orange sunrise, lighter than I would have expected for the proof. I do dig the bottle and label design.

🥔Mash Bill:   78% Corn, 10% Rye, 12% Barley. No Age Statement. This bottle is from barrel number 7699991 which was filled on 5/15/2017. I have no idea when they picked it, but I'd imagine it has been in the store for a bit. Most picks with ages stated by their stores are around the 5-year mark and that aligns with my timeline for this bottle.

It is charcoal mellowed similar to Jack Daniel's Lincoln county process by filtering the whiskey through maple charcoal to theoretically remove impurities and result in a more smooth profile.

👃Nose: Sweet with some butterscotch, peanut shells, and new oak. Some bite but in not out of balance with the proof.

😜Palate: Strong warmth from the get-go, but again not out of alignment with the alcohol content. Somewhat oily on the palate, the flavors start with a strong brown sugar / molasses / corn syrup profile that is pronounced and solid. One dimensional but it maintains great strength of flavor through tongue and onto the finish. I do get some spicy oak from the barrel and a touch of Heaven Hill mint; I suspect from the yeast. Late into the glass, I can start to make out some blood orange towards the end, though it definitely takes a while to warm up the tongue enough to find it.

Upon addition of one regulation large ice cube, the citrus fruit and sweetness are even more apparent, though I think it drinks better neat. The water seems to unbalance the bourbon.

💦Finish: Pretty darn long but mostly heat, flavor less so. It's a solid throat temperature, not too hot, and continues to make its presence known far after the whiskey is down-the-hatch.

🏆 Overall:  6.5/10 - Solid - I started off skeptical of this Ezra Brooks Cask Strength Store Pick, but it has won me over across a number of sessions. As has become my expectation, at first crack I thought it was a bit overly hot, though I probably could have solved that by resting the glass more than my standard 15 minutes. A second brush plus the ice cube similarly left me wanting, but I've had three more runs at the bottle with some intentionality, liking it more each time. With some warm-up, there is complexity to be found here and the Cask Strength aspect is pretty well balanced between heat and flavor. I wish it was a bit thicker and more spice character, but it executes on its profile well enough and I'll be perfectly happy finishing off the bottle. Between this bottle and another contract distilled Rebel Cask Strength store pick also from Lux Row, I prefer the Ezra Brooks.

Bottom of the Bottle Update - Yeah this is good whiskey. With some air, the orange peel and wood blossom into a delightful cream sickle. I have a hard time rating bottles that morph substantially over the course of a bottle, but this is a gem that kept getting better and better with air and time. Open probably like 8 months total, I think we got to peak flavor at about six months. In another six months, it may be flat and over oxidized. Time is a tricky thing.

💵Would buy again? Sure, a balanced Cask Strength in the low $40s is a solid buy in any market. Not sure I would pay full retail.

⚖️Rating Scale:

1 | Disgusting | So bad I poured it out
2 | Poor | I wouldn’t consume it by choice.
3 | Bad | Multiple flaws | Struggle to get through the bottle
4 | Serviceable | Mixing or ice recommended.
5 | Good | Drinkable Neat | An agreeable dram indeed.
6 | Very Good | Any flaws offset by interesting flavors | A cut above.
7 | Great | You find yourself reaching for this one often | Well above average.
8 | Excellent | Serve to Impress Guests | Really quite exceptional.
9 | Incredible | An all time favorite | You guard this bottle jealously.
10 | Perfect | You didn't think anything could be this good | A clear champion.

🥃Review 92: 1.75L Costco's Kirkland Kentucky Bourbon 2026

Costco has historically worked with Barton 1792 for it's bourbon line, putting out a small batch , bottled-in-bond , and single barrel edition in liter bottles in waves over the last few years. This new 1.75L edition debuted in Spring of 2026 and mysteriously lacks a named distiller. The label proudly states that it was distilled and aged in Bardstown, Kentucky before being bottled in Columbia, Tennessee by DC Flynt   MY Domaines & Estates (never heard of them). Flynt appear to be more wine focused and have led a number of wine bottlings for Costco historically in addition to some Gins. Distilleries at scale in Bardstown include Jim Beam, Barton 1792, Heaven Hill (though primary production is at Bernheim in Louisville), Lux Row, Willet, and Bardstown Bourbon Company. I doubt it is Barton 1792 since they proudly label their existing collaboration and I suspect it may be a producer without a 1.75L bottling line (would justify the move better than just adding logistics for ...

☕ All Java Monster Flavors Tasted & Ranked

As a habitual caffeine abuser, I have a soft spot for Monster, both for their expansive lineup of flavors as well as their support for Sports and E-sports. Coffee is my standard caffeination vector, so the Java Monster suite of products is the perfect mix of bean flavor and energy boost. In this post, I'll provide my personal rankings and rationale for what is a very strong lineup.  Note that I have not been compensated in any way for this write-up... I just like them. Currently,  Monster Energy 's Java Monster lineup has five available flavors: Mean Bean - Vanilla Irish Crème Loca Mocha - Chocolate Salted Caramel Café Latte There are two "triple shot" versions of the Vanilla and Mocha which contain 300mg of caffeine though their flavors are very similar to the base versions above. At this point, we should also take a moment of silence for the two cold brew flavors, sweet black and nitro latte. The nitro latte was a personal favorite and I quite liked the sweet black,...

🎮🥃 Call of Duty Zombies: Perk-a-Cola Cocktail Recipes

With yet another Call of Duty release on the horizon, we have assembled a collection of Perk-a-Cola themed cocktail recipes to help you get your zombies gaming session kicked off in just the right way. Be sure to check out our  Zombies Drinking Game Rules  as these recipes make for a great companion. Recipe Overview In general, these recipes attempt to mimic the color and feel of each perk-a-cola. Dark liquors can be swapped interchangeably to your liking and you can substitute vodka or light rum for gin if needed. To lower the calories, you can use sparkling water of a complementary flavor. Alternatively, you could use hard seltzer to up the alcohol content. Use ice aggressively to fill up to 12oz. To little ice and it will melt faster and provide too much dilution while cooling the drink. All of these can be scaled to make a pitcher, just stir extra where it says to shake. Always drink responsibly.  1. Jugger-Nog Boost your health pool with a bracing and creamy cocktail...

🎮Call of Duty Zombies: The Drinking Game - Rules

Since its introduction in Call of Duty: World at War , Call of Duty Zombies has been a PvE staple for gamers everywhere and has appeared in many subsequent titles. In this post, we'll explore rules for turning a game of round-based zombies into a lovely drinking session. As with all drinking games, set limits before you begin and be sure to conduct yourself both legally and responsibly.  Preparation To play the game, you'll need the following in addition to an internet connection, gaming device, and Call of Duty: A Party Sipper of your Choice - I recommend something relatively low ABV. We balanced the rules for a player of moderate ability and a sipper of 4-8% alcohol. Light beer is my go-to here since it has enough lovely hydrating waters to help stave off some small sadness.  A Couple of Shots - I would pre-pour a couple of shots to have on hand. Again, lower end of ABV which for shots likely means 80 proof. Kirkland Canadian Whiskey, Tito's Vodka, or Lunazul Tequila wo...

🔌Review - Costco's Kirkland Sparkling Energy Drink - Orange

Released earlier this year in 2026, the Kirkland Sparkling Energy Drink lineup features three flavors: Orange, Tropical, and Peach. The style, ingredients, and caffeine content seem to be talking aim directly at recent CPG success, Celsius Energy. It echoes that brands "clean" veneer with no high fructose corn syrup, GMO ingredients, or artificial colorings.  🛒 Price:  $16.99/24 ~$.7/each - Costco. Celsius is normally around $20/12 without sales, so figure around 95 cents savings per can vs. full sticker which is around 58% savings. Celsius is showing up frequently on sale around $15 now but that's still not nearly enough to reach parity.  ✨Calories:  10 ,  12oz. can 🍵 Caffeine:  200mg, around a third more than a cup of coffee, more than Monster and Red Bull - similar to Celsius. 👅 Flavor:  Very effervescent, I get tons of bubbles - close to Red Bull and more than Celsius. It does have a thinner mouthfeel vs Monster Ultra and Red Bull on balance whi...
