🥃 Review 33: Four Roses Small Batch Select Bourbon

Known far and wide for their Single Barrels and limited releases, Four Roses is famous for having 10 excellent recipes across two mash bills from which to create reliably exceptional blends. Master Distiller Brent Elliott works with these like an artist with paints to create the 80 proof Four Roses mainstay, 90 proof Small Batch, and 104 Proof Small Batch Select.

📚Background: Four Roses Small Batch Select has garnered some fantastic rating at spirits shows the world over. While it sometimes get's overshadowed by the warehouse location mania for the slightly cheaper 100 proof single barrel, this bottle is a something of a cult classic for Four Roses aficionados, and good lord does it have plenty of awards!

Four Roses Small Batch Select Awards, all from 2023
All of these awards - just in 2023!

I love the bottle design from the black label to the raised glass four roses logo and carved cork. It feels downright classy.

🛒Sourced: $49.99 Costco, GA 750ml

I would note that this is a significant step up from Four Roses Small Batch at $29.99 and outpaces the Single Barrel at $44.99. For the extra cost vs the Small batch, you get a little bit more proof, the "select" moniker, and the addition of two extra recipes in the blend. Ages are about the same across all.

🧪Proof: 104 Proof, 52% Alcohol by Volume

🎨Color: R5 - Sultry burnt orange, some legs - I love, love, love the bottle design. Shape is pleasing, embossed roses beautiful, cork top a nice premium touch.

🥔Mash Bill:   Small Batch Select is a blend of Six of the ten Four Roses Recipes -

  • 1 OBSV - Fruit/Rye
  • 2 OBSK - Rye and Baking Spice
  • 5 OBSF - Rye and Mint
  • 6 OESV - Fruit/Caramel
  • 7 OESK Baking Spice
  • 10 OESF - Grain & Mint
The first letter is always "O" for Four Roses as the distillery. You'll see by the second letter, that both Mash Bills "B" and "E" are used in the blend.
  • Mash Bill B (High Rye) - 60% Corn, 35% Rye, 5% Barley
  • Mash Bill E (High Corn) - 75% Corn, 20% Rye, 5% Barley

The Third Level is always "S" for straight whiskey. Which leaves, the fourth letter as denoting the yeast strain. Most distillers don't talk much about their yeast, indeed it is a large part of the distinctive flavors between brands. This blend includes yeasts F (Herbal), K(Spice), and V(Delicate Fruit) which leaves out Q (Floral) and O(Rich Fruit).

Distillation proof ranges from 138-140 which they then reduce with water to 120 proof, lower than the legal maximum of 125.

Aged 6 - 7 Years per the website, Lack of age statement is likely due to not wanting the rigor of having to prove this out for each batch. All four roses bourbon regardless of the label ages for five years. Non-chill filtered.

👃Nose: Cumin, orchard wood, warm hay, and honey. Some proof but approachable still.

😜Palate: Cider, a hint of orange citrus, a flash of rye, and a little bit of sweetness to balance it out. Overall reminds me of a rather dry apple pie. Medium-light mouthfeel. I would describe it overall as being "bright" with something of a mineral quality.

💦Finish: The flash of rye and sweetness persists for a medium duration. I get more wood here than elsewhere in the dram. Potentially a bit of cinnamon to round off our apple pie. Building heat and ethanol tang.

🏆 Overall:  5.5/10 - Good - Based on what I had heard from others, I expected to like it more. After an underwhelming first crack, I sat on pushing this review until I was halfway through the bottle. A little oxygen did somewhat improve the flavor, tempering an initial abrasive heat but did not holistically change my feelings. For my palate, there may just be too much going on in this bottle. The six recipes seem to almost fight with each other. The apple pie and America flavor profile is intriguing but was not enough to make me want to reach for this bottle regularly. I much prefer the purity of Four Roses Single Barrel and the frugality of the regular Small Batch or Yellow Label since they save me $20. Looking at this bottle from a design perspective, I'm a bit confused. It is priced higher than Single Barrel and has a slightly higher proof but doesn't have a clear theme like their limited releases. All of that being said, if you are a Four Roses fan, I would still pick up a bottle of this to see if it is to your liking. Those that love Small Batch Select, LOVE Small Batch Select, an apparently polarizing bottle.

💵Would buy again? Doubtful, I'll spend my cheddar on the rest of the Four Roses lineup.

⚖️Rating Scale:

1 | Disgusting | So bad I poured it out
2 | Poor | I wouldn’t consume it by choice.
3 | Bad | Multiple flaws | Struggle to get through the bottle
4 | Serviceable | Mixing or ice recommended.
5 | Good | Drinkable Neat | An agreeable dram indeed.
6 | Very Good | Any flaws offset by interesting flavors | A cut above.
7 | Great | You find yourself reaching for this one often | Well above average.
8 | Excellent | Serve to Impress Guests | Really quite exceptional.
9 | Incredible | An all time favorite | You guard this bottle jealously.

🥃Review 53: Costco's Kirkland 15YR Highland Single Malt Scotch 2025

The 2025 release of Costco's Kirkland 15-year Highland Scotch hit shelves in late January and is a recurring installment on an annual cadence. The first pallet to hit my local store sold out almost immediately. Thankfully, we got two more shipments at one pallet each that hung around a bit longer and I was able to snag a bottle. Like in previous years, this Highland Scotch is finished in sherry casks. Alexander Murray & Co. is the bottler with MISA imports out of Texas bringing it to the States for consumption (Costco's standard sourcing pattern for Scotch). The bottle has a nice heft to it and there is an ensconced Alexander Murray Lion adding some nice texture to the front of the bottle. Steve Lipp, CEO of Alexander Murray, calls it "Perfect for after dinner drinking." All-in-all, this shows an attempt to elevate the product and presentation from the ubiquitous blends and non-age stated iterations you'll sometimes find under the Kirkland label.  Neither Alex...

🥃Review #15 Costco's Kirkland Small Batch Bourbon

Costco's liquor store is a thing of beauty. While not every Kirkland edition is a hit, there are enough standouts on a fun per dollar ratio to always merit a look. Almost all of the house brands are less than $30, and I'm always excited to take a long shot when the new seasonal releases come around.  📚 Background: Distilled by Barton 1792 in Bardstown Kentucky, Kirkland Small Batch Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey hits the shelves a few times a year. Mine was from batch 1124. The bottle presentation is supposed to evoke the same feel as other small batch whiskeys and there is a decorative purity seal that is reminiscent of the ever reliable bottled in bond green filigree, albeit in a meaningless red. Unlike its bonded brethren, this edition comes in under 100 proof and does not have any age statement. There's not a whole lot of additional information provided by Costco or the distiller, but we can reasonably assume that it shares a similar pedigree as the entry level 1792...

🍺🍷🥃 Beer, Wine, and Spirits Rebate Website Master List

If there is anything I love more than a good drink, it's saving money buying that good drink! The rules for providing discounts on alcohol differ substantially between states with some allowing outright discounts or coupons and others entirely disallowing any sort of purchase incentive. Thankfully though, in my native Georgia as well as most states, a simple reimbursement approach is permissible.  Last Updated & Validated 4/17/2026 . None of these are affiliate links and I provide no assurance as to the process. I have saved so much money using rebates and hope you have similar success. ☕ All Java Monster Flavors Tasted & Ranked

As a habitual caffeine abuser, I have a soft spot for Monster, both for their expansive lineup of flavors as well as their support for Sports and E-sports. Coffee is my standard caffeination vector, so the Java Monster suite of products is the perfect mix of bean flavor and energy boost. In this post, I'll provide my personal rankings and rationale for what is a very strong lineup.  Note that I have not been compensated in any way for this write-up... I just like them. Currently,  Monster Energy 's Java Monster lineup has five available flavors: Mean Bean - Vanilla Irish Crème Loca Mocha - Chocolate Salted Caramel Café Latte There are two "triple shot" versions of the Vanilla and Mocha which contain 300mg of caffeine though their flavors are very similar to the base versions above. At this point, we should also take a moment of silence for the two cold brew flavors, sweet black and nitro latte. The nitro latte was a personal favorite and I quite liked the sweet black,...

🥃Review 90: Evan Williams Single Barrel Vintage - America 250 Anniversary

An officially licensed product in partnership with America250, the non-partisan commission established by Congress to plan the nation's 250th anniversary, this commemorative bottling from Heaven Hill showcases the strengths of their huge production capacity and excellent unit economics. Only a fitting 250 barrels were selected which puts my estimate for total yield around 40-45K bottles. All barrels were personally selected by Master Distiller Conor O'Driscoll. As part of the promotion of this offering, Heaven Hill donated $75K to Folds of Honor which provides educational scholarships to the family of fallen or disabled US Service members and first responders.  🛒 Sourced: $39.99 for 750ml from Smyrna World of Beverage, April 2026. This is my first time seeing it on the shelf in market, though Georgia tends to be a bit late to new releases. With the lower proof Vintage appearing in the $30-$32 range, this bottle is also likely one of the stronger values on the market. Pricing...
