πŸ₯ƒ Review 33: Four Roses Small Batch Select Bourbon

Known far and wide for their Single Barrels and limited releases, Four Roses is famous for having 10 excellent recipes across two mash bills from which to create reliably exceptional blends. Master Distiller Brent Elliott works with these like an artist with paints to create the 80 proof Four Roses mainstay, 90 proof Small Batch, and 104 Proof Small Batch Select.

πŸ“šBackground: Four Roses Small Batch Select has garnered some fantastic rating at spirits shows the world over. While it sometimes get's overshadowed by the warehouse location mania for the slightly cheaper 100 proof single barrel, this bottle is a something of a cult classic for Four Roses aficionados, and good lord does it have plenty of awards!

Four Roses Small Batch Select Awards, all from 2023
All of these awards - just in 2023!

I love the bottle design from the black label to the raised glass four roses logo and carved cork. It feels downright classy.

πŸ›’Sourced: $49.99 Costco, GA 750ml

I would note that this is a significant step up from Four Roses Small Batch at $29.99 and outpaces the Single Barrel at $44.99. For the extra cost vs the Small batch, you get a little bit more proof, the "select" moniker, and the addition of two extra recipes in the blend. Ages are about the same across all.

πŸ§ͺProof: 104 Proof, 52% Alcohol by Volume

🎨Color: R5 - Sultry burnt orange, some legs - I love, love, love the bottle design. Shape is pleasing, embossed roses beautiful, cork top a nice premium touch.

πŸ₯”Mash Bill:   Small Batch Select is a blend of Six of the ten Four Roses Recipes -

  • 1 OBSV - Fruit/Rye
  • 2 OBSK - Rye and Baking Spice
  • 5 OBSF - Rye and Mint
  • 6 OESV - Fruit/Caramel
  • 7 OESK Baking Spice
  • 10 OESF - Grain & Mint
The first letter is always "O" for Four Roses as the distillery. You'll see by the second letter, that both Mash Bills "B" and "E" are used in the blend.
  • Mash Bill B (High Rye) - 60% Corn, 35% Rye, 5% Barley
  • Mash Bill E (High Corn) - 75% Corn, 20% Rye, 5% Barley

The Third Level is always "S" for straight whiskey. Which leaves, the fourth letter as denoting the yeast strain. Most distillers don't talk much about their yeast, indeed it is a large part of the distinctive flavors between brands. This blend includes yeasts F (Herbal), K(Spice), and V(Delicate Fruit) which leaves out Q (Floral) and O(Rich Fruit).

Distillation proof ranges from 138-140 which they then reduce with water to 120 proof, lower than the legal maximum of 125.

Aged 6 - 7 Years per the website, Lack of age statement is likely due to not wanting the rigor of having to prove this out for each batch. All four roses bourbon regardless of the label ages for five years. Non-chill filtered.

πŸ‘ƒNose: Cumin, orchard wood, warm hay, and honey. Some proof but approachable still.

😜Palate: Cider, a hint of orange citrus, a flash of rye, and a little bit of sweetness to balance it out. Overall reminds me of a rather dry apple pie. Medium-light mouthfeel. I would describe it overall as being "bright" with something of a mineral quality.

πŸ’¦Finish: The flash of rye and sweetness persists for a medium duration. I get more wood here than elsewhere in the dram. Potentially a bit of cinnamon to round off our apple pie. Building heat and ethanol tang.

πŸ† Overall:  5.5/10 - Good - Based on what I had heard from others, I expected to like it more. After an underwhelming neck pour, I sat on pushing this review until I was halfway through the bottle. A little oxygen did somewhat improve the flavor, tempering an initial abrasive heat but did not holistically change my feelings. For my palate, there may just be too much going on in this bottle. The six recipes seem to almost fight with each other. The apple pie and America flavor profile is intriguing but was not enough to make me want to reach for this bottle regularly. I much prefer the purity of Four Roses Single Barrel and the frugality of the regular Small Batch or Yellow Label since they save me $20. Looking at this bottle from a design perspective, I'm a bit confused. It is priced higher than Single Barrel and has a slightly higher proof but doesn't have a clear theme like their limited releases. All of that being said, if you are a Four Roses fan, I would still pick up a bottle of this to see if it is to your liking. Those that love Small Batch Select, LOVE Small Batch Select, an apparently polarizing bottle.

πŸ’΅Would buy again? Doubtful, I'll spend my cheddar on the rest of the Four Roses lineup.

πŸ₯ƒπŸ“° First Look: NEW Old Fitzgerald 7-Year Bottled-in-Bond Bourbon

In a TTB filing , Heaven Hill soft announces a new Old Fitzgerald edition whiskey: Old Fitzgerald Bottled-in-Bond 7-Year Bourbon. The Old Fitzgerald decanter line has long been a coveted edition, but low supply and high demand means that it is terribly hard to find, particularly for anything close to suggested retail price. Official press from the distiller has not yet occurred, but we have put together the following details.  About Old Fitzgerald From Heaven Hill's wheated mash bill (68% Corn, 20% Wheat, 12% Barley), the Old Fitzgerald decanter series is a Bottled-in-Bond offering released twice annually. This mash bill is also likely shared by the Larceny series of products, all aged in #3 char barrels.  Old Fitzgerald Decanter Series Old Fitzgerald 7-Year Bottled-in-Bond credit @Bourbonconky posted on X.com by  Bourb Your Enthusiasm The new product will have a seven year age statement, and per the bottled-in-bond act will consist of bourbon produced by Heaven Hill wit...

πŸ₯ƒReview #53: Costco's Kirkland 15YR Highland Single Malt Scotch - 2025

The 2025 release of Costco's Kirkland 15-year Highland Scotch hit shelves in late January and is a recurring installment on an annual cadence. The first pallet to hit my local store sold out almost immediately. Thankfully, we got two more shipments at one pallet each that hung around a bit longer and I was able to snag a bottle. Like in previous years, this Highland Scotch is finished in sherry casks. Alexander Murray & Co. is the bottler with MISA imports out of Texas bringing it to the States for consumption (Costco's standard sourcing pattern for Scotch). The bottle has a nice heft to it and there is an ensconced Alexander Murray Lion adding some nice texture to the front of the bottle. Steve Lipp, CEO of Alexander Murray, calls it "Perfect for after dinner drinking." All-in-all, this shows an attempt to elevate the product and presentation from the ubiquitous blends and non-age stated iterations you'll sometimes find under the Kirkland label.  Neither Alex...

πŸ₯ƒReview #30: Kirkland Bourbon Casked Rum XO

XO stands for "Extra Old" but how does this bottle of Bourbon Casked Rum from Costco's Kirkland Signature line measure up? πŸ“š Background: Finished in used Cognac barrels, this bottle is a product of Guatemala, imported for Costco by MISA IMPORTS out of Dallas Texas. MISA, named after the founder's children Michael and Sarah, started primarily as a sourcing partner for fine wines, but has since expanded operations into sourcing spirits. MISA's rum brand partners include 1731 , Autentico Nativo , and Navy Island. We would have to guess the maker if not for the back label which clearly identifies one Olivier Dumont, Master Blender. Mr. Dumont works for  Les Bienheureux , a French company growing at an alarming rate that has both a foothold in French Whisky and Costa Rican Rum. Les Bienheureux is the company behind "El Pasador De Oro " (roughly translated as "Gold Pin") which has two widely available iterations.  The XO version retails for $46.99 a...

πŸ₯ƒ Review #40: Kirkland Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky (2024)

Like Costco's other Scotches, the Kirkland Signature Islay Single Malt is bottled for Alexander Murray and imported by MISA Imports after being distilled and aged in Scotland (TTB.gov plant registry TX-I-1277). The isle of Islay is one of the southern most islands in Scotland and is one of the five whisky regions ensconced in law. There are only nine active distilleries on the island, and the Islay style is typified by strong peat or smoky flavors. As a single malt, we know that the juice in this bottle comes entirely from one of those nine! All of the distilleries are significantly smaller than Glenlivet and many of the mainland producers. Taste testing has people split between Caol Illa, Bruichladdich (Port Charlotte), and Bunnahabhain as being the source. Caol Illa and Laphroig both have done deals for private brand scotch without rights to name the source distillery, but Laphroig does not match the flavor profile for this bottle. Realistically, Caol Illa is the most likely cand...

🍺🍷πŸ₯ƒ Beer, Wine, and Spirits Rebate Website Master List

If there is anything I love more than a good drink, it's saving money buying that good drink! The rules for providing discounts on alcohol differ substantially between states with some allowing outright discounts or coupons and others entirely disallowing any sort of purchase incentive. Thankfully though, in my native Georgia as well as most states, a simple reimbursement approach is permissible.  Alcohol Rebate Site Master List The following sites are relatively stable for each manufacturer.
