A dessert adjacent pour derived from Wolfhead's Canadian Whisky, this bottling is mixed with cane sugar, coffee, and vanilla extract to create an indulgent liqueur for enjoying neat, over ice cream, or in a cocktail. Wolfhead is known for pushing the limits of Canadian Whisky with flavored infusions as variations on their whiskey, vodka, and gin base spirits.
This review is from a 50ml mini bottle so will not have the benefit of additional fine tuning sessions.
🛒Sourced: Free - A room gift from a lovely little hotel in Kingsville, Ontario. $33 for a 750ml which really isn't bad at all.
🧪Proof: 30 proof, 60% ABV
🎨Color: R7 - Pretty dark, not surprising - it does have coffee in there so that makes sense.
🥔Mash Bill & Production: No specifics disclosed. They use 100% Ontario-grown grains including corn, rye, and barley malt.
👃Nose: If you've ever had an espresso martini, this smells exactly like that. There are some softer wood undertones but not terribly much of a whiskey influence that I can detect.
😜Palate: Syrupy and smooth, very thick and full bodied. It's sweet to the point that I can see it working perfectly in most cocktails. The coffee flavor is well rounded and there is enough vanilla punch to accent. Still could do with more of a whiskey influence, but I like it more than most neutral grain coffee combos. I keep coming back to how nice the mouthfeel is. The sweetness isn't overbearing and I could see myself having a small dessert dram neat easily enough.
💦Finish: Buckets of vanilla which persist after the coffee fades. Medium duration.
🏆 Overall: 7.5/10 - Great - Next time I'm up in Ontario, I'm picking up a full bottle. This checks all the boxes in a way major liqueurs cannot. If I have one gripe, it's that I would have loved more of a wood or rye whiskey patina to show through.
💵Would buy again? Yes! It's darn good and priced well for a craft product. I have a visceral need to try it over some vanilla ice cream.
