🍷 Flor De Pingus 2020 Lot 1 Wine Review &Tasting

Flor de Pingus 2020 on its side next to a woven placemat

Produced by Dominio de Pingus, Flor de Pingus ("Flower of Pingus") is crafted annually in limited quantities as a younger and more approachable alternative to the super premium flagship Pingus bearing the winery's full name and commonly retailing above $1000. In 1993, Danish oenologist Peter Sisseck arrived in Spain to make wine for Hacienda Monasterio. While in country, he fell in love with the old Tinto Fino vines in Ribera. Two years later, he came across some vineyards with even older Tinto Fino vines and bought them, infatuated with the possibility of crafting small batch excellence from majority old growth vines. He named the estate "Pingus" after his childhood nickname. The brand shot to immediate fame in 1996 when Robert Parker of Wine Advocate awarded the flagship bottle an unheard-of 96-100 point score. Interestingly enough, the first vintage of Flor de Pingus was almost lost entirely when a container ship sank in the North Atlantic in 1998. Flor features slightly more young-vine fruit, macerated and fermented with up to 40% whole clusters for two to three weeks. After malolactic fermentation is complete, the wine is racked into French oak barrels where it is left to mature for around 18months. As Sisseck has had more time to build out mature vines, the use of new vine grapes has continued to decrease in prevalence. The wine that results is touted as being some of the best in the world, with Wine Advocate saying: “In the price/quality sweepstakes, this might be Spain’s finest wine.”

🛒Sourced: Gifted from a dear friend for my 30th birthday, commonly around $130. The bottle is elegant with simple labeling; the name sells itself. It also features multiple quality indicators including  a regional duty stamp and a Bubble Tag on the Ethereum blockchain, scanned via QR code overlapping the top bottle seal.

🌎Origin: Spain's Ribera Del Duero region, one of the country's top red wine producing areas. It is located in the northwest of the country, about two hours north of Madrid, at the center of Castilla y León which is Spain’s largest or state. Ribera del Duero, "Riverbanks of the Duero", runs from the east of Aranda del Duero westward to Valladolid. The area has a dynamic climate with dry summers and long winters to produce wide temperature ranges. Rainfall is somewhat limited, and the grapes that grow there are small with thick skins, benefitting from an optimal slow ripening cycle which peaks late in the season.

🍇Variety: The grape varietal is 100% Tempranillo, known for the following qualities:

  • Aromatic: Often exhibits aromas of red fruits, such as cherry, strawberry, and raspberry, as well as notes of spice, tobacco, and leather.
  • Tannins: Moderate-high tannins, contributing to the wine's structure and strong aging potential
  • Acidity: Typically have good acidity, balancing the tannins and providing freshness
  • Versatility: The grape can produce wines ranging from light and fruity to full-bodied and complex, depending on the region, climate, and winemaking techniques.
Pingus focuses on sustainable growing practices maintaining  grape trunks that are straight, lowered, and pruned back to 1-2 buds per cane. Yields have typically been under one ton per acre.

🍷 Served: Slightly chilled, about 64F in a Bordeaux glass, rested 10 minutes. Accompanied by steak dinner, salad, sweet potatoes, & cheese bread.

🧪Proof: 28 proof, 14% ABV

🎨Color: Ruby red, medium to thick legs

👃Nose: Berry forward and relatively sweet, can tell there is some tannin or acid bite

😜Palate: On the lighter side of medium body, plum and blackberry. Balanced and not overly dry or sweet. Tannins are abundant. Very clean.

💦Finish: Fairly short, a small bite but full flavors persist.

🏆 Overall: 7.5/10 Great Well Above Average What started as a joke turned out to be a whole lot more (illustrative quote below). Flor de Pingus delivers a very smooth and satisfying experience. I am thinking that it still has more to show us, perhaps in another year. For the cost there may be other comparable bottles, but I truly enjoyed taking a look into the portfolio of one of the world's greatest wineries for less than a box of ziti.

🍺 Costco's Kirkland Vintage Ale 2025 - Review & Tasting Notes

Fall is in the air, and that means we have yet another year of Kirkland's Vintage Ale! Brewed proudly by  Deschutes (pronounced "Da-Shootz") in Bend, Oregon, this Bourbon Barrel-Aged Imperial Stout spends nine months in the wood, picking up what the whiskey left behind (mostly vanillin and tannins). Bottled over the summer, this particular beer is from Lot B. Neither Costco nor the packaging give us much additional detail beyond the ABV and style. I remember finding  last year 's edition to be solid but nothing to write home about, fairly dry but a pleasant pour. The use of the work "vintage" to me implies that some changes may be made year-to-year but we'll have to see if our taste buds can help us validate. How does the 2025 vintage fair? 💅Style: Bourbon Barrel Imperial Stout 🛒Sourced: $7.99 Costco, GA  for a 22oz bottle. $2 cheaper than the 2024 edition! 💥Hops:   Not Mentioned sadly. Other ingredients include chocolate malt, milled oats and Dutc...

🍺🍷🥃 Beer, Wine, and Spirits Rebate Website Master List

If there is anything I love more than a good drink, it's saving money buying that good drink! The rules for providing discounts on alcohol differ substantially between states with some allowing outright discounts or coupons and others entirely disallowing any sort of purchase incentive. Thankfully though, in my native Georgia as well as most states, a simple reimbursement approach is permissible.  Alcohol Rebate Site Master List The following sites are relatively stable for each manufacturer. New offers usually come out every few months. None of these are affiliate links and I provide no assurance as to the process. I have saved so much money using rebates and hope you have similar success. Best practices and general process advice will be presented at the bottom. New sites will be added as I uncover them. ☕ All Java Monster Flavors Tasted & Ranked

As a habitual caffeine abuser, I have a soft spot for Monster, both for their expansive lineup of flavors as well as their support for Sports and E-sports. Coffee is my standard caffeination vector, so the Java Monster suite of products is the perfect mix of bean flavor and energy boost. In this post, I'll provide my personal rankings and rationale for what is a very strong lineup.  Note that I have not been compensated in any way for this write-up... I just like them. Currently,  Monster Energy 's Java Monster lineup has five available flavors: Mean Bean - Vanilla Irish Crème Loca Mocha - Chocolate Salted Caramel Café Latte There are two "triple shot" versions of the Vanilla and Mocha which contain 300mg of caffeine though their flavors are very similar to the base versions above. At this point, we should also take a moment of silence for the two cold brew flavors, sweet black and nitro latte. The nitro latte was a personal favorite and I quite liked the sweet black,...

🥃Review #15 Costco's Kirkland Small Batch Bourbon

Costco's liquor store is a thing of beauty. While not every Kirkland edition is a hit, there are enough standouts on a fun per dollar ratio to always merit a look. Almost all of the house brands are less than $30, and I'm always excited to take a long shot when the new seasonal releases come around.  📚 Background: Distilled by Barton 1792 in Bardstown Kentucky, Kirkland Small Batch Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey hits the shelves a few times a year. Mine was from batch 1124. The bottle presentation is supposed to evoke the same feel as other small batch whiskeys and there is a decorative purity seal that is reminiscent of the ever reliable bottled in bond green filigree, albeit in a meaningless red. Unlike its bonded brethren, this edition comes in under 100 proof and does not have any age statement. There's not a whole lot of additional information provided by Costco or the distiller, but we can reasonably assume that it shares a similar pedigree as the entry level 1792...

🥃Review #53: Costco's Kirkland 15YR Highland Single Malt Scotch - 2025

The 2025 release of Costco's Kirkland 15-year Highland Scotch hit shelves in late January and is a recurring installment on an annual cadence. The first pallet to hit my local store sold out almost immediately. Thankfully, we got two more shipments at one pallet each that hung around a bit longer and I was able to snag a bottle. Like in previous years, this Highland Scotch is finished in sherry casks. Alexander Murray & Co. is the bottler with MISA imports out of Texas bringing it to the States for consumption (Costco's standard sourcing pattern for Scotch). The bottle has a nice heft to it and there is an ensconced Alexander Murray Lion adding some nice texture to the front of the bottle. Steve Lipp, CEO of Alexander Murray, calls it "Perfect for after dinner drinking." All-in-all, this shows an attempt to elevate the product and presentation from the ubiquitous blends and non-age stated iterations you'll sometimes find under the Kirkland label.  Neither Alex...
