🥃Review 87: Four Roses Single Barrel - OBSV

Four Roses Single Barrel - OBSV

Four Roses has long been praised for the quality and consistency of its single barrel editions. They currently release a number of their ten recipes as single barrels, but this is from the original OBSV recipe "standard" bottling that is most prevalent. If you're not familiar with Four Roses recipe codes they follow a structured format:

  1. Distillery - "O" for all recipes, meaning distilled at Four Roses Distillery
  2. Mash Bill - either "B" (60% Corn, 35% Rye, 5% Barley) or "E"(75% Corn, 20% Rye, 5% Barley)
  3. Straight Whiskey - "S" for all editions
  4. Yeast Strain - V(Delicate Fruit), K(Spice), O (Rich Fruit, Q(Floral),or F(Herbal).
The combination of the two mashes and five yeasts yields 10 possible variations. If your head isn't already spinning, Four Roses also includes the exact warehouse aging location for each single barrel. This one is from Rickhouse TS and has the code 49-3C which means rick/row number 39, tier 3 (height), and position 3 (C=3 into the rick/deep). The warehouses have tiers 1-6 with lower ones having less temperature interaction for lower proof and less wood while the opposite will be true of the high tiers. I tend to seek out those in tier 3/4 when I get the chance as they'll have the most balanced aging experience.

🛒Sourced: $42.99 at Tower Beer Wine & Spirits, GA - 750ml. A pretty darn good value for the proof and age.

🧪Proof: 100 proof, 50% ABV

🎨Color: Y5 - honeycomb yellow, decently leggy

🥔Mash Bill & Production: 60% Corn, 35% Rye, 5% Barley per the "B" recipe above. This is the very high rye mash bill and brings plenty of spice.

  • Distiller's Beer: 8% ABV
  • Distillation Proof: 138-140
  • Age - No Age statement - Marketed on their website as 7 - 9 Years.
  • Barrel Entry Proof - 120
  • Char - 45 second burn, ~3.5 (between #3 and #4)
  • Batch Size - 1 Single Barrel
  • Chill Filtered - Yes
Four Roses uses single story warehouses which means that temperatures are much more consistent, around 8 degrees different between top rick and bottom. Compare this to a 30 degree differential in some of the taller rickhouses used by their competitors and you can start to understand how they are able to more easily offer a consistent single barrel experience. Barrels that don't make the cut are dumped into yellow label or or small batch select.

👃Nose: Ample fruit and spice with date, nutmeg, figs, and ripe plum.

😜Palate: Relatively smooth on the tongue but with a little bit of rye spice tingle into the finish which keeps it interesting. True to nose though more baking spice than fruit. Medium thickness and pleasant mouthfeel; roll it around to maximize flavor. It feels like it should be sweeter from the nose, but there is a little white pepper aspect to balance well.

💦Finish: Somewhat short, there is a good nip of clove and allspice that tapers into a lingering warmth after the flavor fades. Cozy.

🏆 Overall:  7.5/10 - Great - OBSV lives up to its expectation and is a solid pour and an even more solid price. This particular barrel is a great spice bomb while remaining temperate and easy-drinking. I'm a pretty big fan!

💵Would buy again? Sure, I also need to get the batched full proof in the rotation at some point. This bottle is a phenomenal value.

🔌Monster Energy Ultra Review - Blue Hawaiian, Fantasy Ruby Red, & Vice Guava

One of Monster Energy's newer variety packs, this set features Blue Hawaiian, Fantasy Ruby Red, & Vice Guava and seeks to continue on the success of the White Monster Ultra Zero. They have the same high carbonation, featuring tiny bubbles for an effervescent mouthfeel, and citrus flavor focal point, but each ads a special fruited twist.  Flavor Ultra Blue Hawaiian - Pineapple dominates an undercurrent of coconut in this Monster twist on a tropical punch. Some batches have seemed to be a bit under carbonated but this variety pack edition doesn't have that issue. Strong pineapple aftertaste and juice reminiscent mouthfeel.  Ultra Fantasy Ruby Red - Officially Fresh Pink Pamplemousse, Fantasy Ruby Red delivers the grapefruit you'd expect along with blood orange and tangerine, reminiscent of the white monster but with an additional buff to the citrus and slightly more substantial texture. Honestly, this may be an improvement over the the White Ultra. Ultra Vice Gua...

🥃Review 92: 1.75L Costco's Kirkland Kentucky Bourbon 2026

Costco has historically worked with Barton 1792 for it's bourbon line, putting out a small batch , bottled-in-bond , and single barrel edition in liter bottles in waves over the last few years. This new 1.75L edition debuted in Spring of 2026 and mysteriously lacks a named distiller. The label proudly states that it was distilled and aged in Bardstown, Kentucky before being bottled in Columbia, Tennessee by DC Flynt   MY Domaines & Estates (never heard of them). Flynt appear to be more wine focused and have led a number of wine bottlings for Costco historically in addition to some Gins. Distilleries at scale in Bardstown include Jim Beam, Barton 1792, Heaven Hill (though primary production is at Bernheim in Louisville), Lux Row, Willet, and Bardstown Bourbon Company. I doubt it is Barton 1792 since they proudly label their existing collaboration and I suspect it may be a producer without a 1.75L bottling line (would justify the move better than just adding logistics for ...

☕ All Java Monster Flavors Tasted & Ranked

As a habitual caffeine abuser, I have a soft spot for Monster, both for their expansive lineup of flavors as well as their support for Sports and E-sports. Coffee is my standard caffeination vector, so the Java Monster suite of products is the perfect mix of bean flavor and energy boost. In this post, I'll provide my personal rankings and rationale for what is a very strong lineup.  Note that I have not been compensated in any way for this write-up... I just like them. Currently,  Monster Energy 's Java Monster lineup has five available flavors: Mean Bean - Vanilla Irish Crème Loca Mocha - Chocolate Salted Caramel Café Latte There are two "triple shot" versions of the Vanilla and Mocha which contain 300mg of caffeine though their flavors are very similar to the base versions above. At this point, we should also take a moment of silence for the two cold brew flavors, sweet black and nitro latte. The nitro latte was a personal favorite and I quite liked the sweet black,...

🎮🥃 Call of Duty Zombies: Perk-a-Cola Cocktail Recipes

With yet another Call of Duty release on the horizon, we have assembled a collection of Perk-a-Cola themed cocktail recipes to help you get your zombies gaming session kicked off in just the right way. Be sure to check out our  Zombies Drinking Game Rules  as these recipes make for a great companion. Recipe Overview In general, these recipes attempt to mimic the color and feel of each perk-a-cola. Dark liquors can be swapped interchangeably to your liking and you can substitute vodka or light rum for gin if needed. To lower the calories, you can use sparkling water of a complementary flavor. Alternatively, you could use hard seltzer to up the alcohol content. Use ice aggressively to fill up to 12oz. To little ice and it will melt faster and provide too much dilution while cooling the drink. All of these can be scaled to make a pitcher, just stir extra where it says to shake. Always drink responsibly.  1. Jugger-Nog Boost your health pool with a bracing and creamy cocktail...

🎮Call of Duty Zombies: The Drinking Game - Rules

Since its introduction in Call of Duty: World at War , Call of Duty Zombies has been a PvE staple for gamers everywhere and has appeared in many subsequent titles. In this post, we'll explore rules for turning a game of round-based zombies into a lovely drinking session. As with all drinking games, set limits before you begin and be sure to conduct yourself both legally and responsibly.  Preparation To play the game, you'll need the following in addition to an internet connection, gaming device, and Call of Duty: A Party Sipper of your Choice - I recommend something relatively low ABV. We balanced the rules for a player of moderate ability and a sipper of 4-8% alcohol. Light beer is my go-to here since it has enough lovely hydrating waters to help stave off some small sadness.  A Couple of Shots - I would pre-pour a couple of shots to have on hand. Again, lower end of ABV which for shots likely means 80 proof. Kirkland Canadian Whiskey, Tito's Vodka, or Lunazul Tequila wo...
